Out of Character 022: Crisis of Treachery
![]() |
In today’s show we get settled down into our routine and announce several coming interviews, some conventions we are soon attending, and recent news. Palladium is asking for help to recover from their crisis of treachery. We talk some about the cease in publication of Dragon and Dungeon magazines as well as the announcement that Margaret Weis Productions will no longer be licensed to carry on with DragonLance. |
| Throughout the course of feedback the topic of Nanofictionary comes up. We agreed this game deserved some attention. It is another by Looney Labs that just didn’t get enough mention in our prior shows. You have a small hand of cards, each with an element you must use to tell your nano-sized fiction. Teachers have also found great uses for this fun game. | ![]() |

The next convention we are excited to be a part of is Con Games in Phoenix, Arizona. It will be over June 14th – 17th. Make sure to stop by our booth and say hello. We are really eager to get into some games and see our friends that we usually only see in the convention circuit. It is said this is the event to go to. We can’t wait. |
| We have also started preparations for Gen Con, Indianapolis. We will be exhibiting of course but have also made plans to put together an entire track of panels, record a live show, and meet you at the Gen Con’s first podcasting meet and greet! It is going to be one of the greatest podcasting events we will ever be a part of. | ![]() |
As we close the show we are distracted by Spiderman 3. Do not listen to the critics and go see the show. You will love it!

The army lets Jeremiah have an M-16? Yikes! They should rename the red security level to DEFCON JEREMIAH when that happens.

This situation with Palladium seems to be getting weirder by the minute. Assuming what Palladium has put forth as the circumstances are true (I’ve never seen/heard anything from the person accused of the misappropriation), it is truly regrettable that a company that has been around as long as Palladium whose games are still enjoyed by so many people had to suffer that fate.
That being said, I can’t decide in my own mind whether Palladium’s appeals to its fan-base are a noble rallying cry or an embarrassing plea. I’m only an observer but from my vantage-point Mr. Siembieda and his cadre are engaging in some dangerously expensive non-rational escalation of commitment to Palladium existing the way it did during its best times indefinitely. I would predict that this is an approach that, barring some extraordinary event (which is not impossible), Palladium is destined to limp along until its proverbial heart gives out. I don’t say that to be a doomsayer but merely as a critique to their current approach.
Again, I’m only a bystander but it would seem to me that what Palladium needs to do is invoke a new business model with an investor that “gets” Palladium. The megaverse, specifically Rifts, is a brand that I’m sure many people will continue to rally around. I wonder if sentimentality and creative control issues are keeping Palladium in the dire straits they are. What should that business model be? Heck, if I knew that I’d be pitching it to Palladium, not posting here! Begging fans simply to buy more and more product to solve a current cash deficit may work in the short term but, sooner or later, most people will say “enough is enough.”

As to the Palladium situation, I’m sorry, but I’m not going to go out and buy new Palladium books. Companies and RPGs come and go. We can’t always rally around a system when it’s in trouble. Maybe it’s in trouble for a reason. Maybe the system isn’t that great. Let it go. Morn the loss and move on.
And, Palladium should take the person who did this to court. Take legal action against them. That is if you can take them to court.
I don’t know. I guess I’m just not as sympathetic as others would be. Life is tough, but don’t ask your fans to buy more books to help bail you out when you and your company have made bad decisions.

Oh, and firejeremiah, give it up. The Jeremiah jokes are old. Make some comments that are relevant to the topic. Get over the fact that Jeremiah isn’t going away.
Sorry to seem rude, but c’mon.
