PGOC 121: Oh, the Drama! |
|
We are inspired by a letter from David Mamet to the writers of The Unit. This launches a discussion on drama and how it applies to your roleplaying games. Jason Corley is interviewed on The Canon Pucture Show. Games in today's show include Vampire, Masters of Venice, RUIN, and Covert Action.

Also, my name is spelled Corley.
If you have a dark background, use lighter lettering. Second rule of PowerPoint.
But I like the word balloon in the logo.
Much better thanks.

Hi guys,
FAIL!
There you go Ron.
But seriously the show was pretty good. Here we go.
Action Castle - I've seen posts on this game on Story Games but did pay much attention to them. Maybe I'll look into it more just to see what it is about. Sounds kind of interesting. Maybe.
I will say that Inspectres is cool. It has neat mechanics like Ron was mentioning. You all should give it a go. Besides, you'll definitely get to say 'That would be bad.' or '...dogs and cats, living together.' in context.
About Mamet's letter - Another podcast (Narrative Control, I think) broadcast on this not too long ago also. Go check it out as they had some interesting things to say. Thanks for the 3 questions about drama. I like them and will probably use them some as I prep games. The best thing I took out of your conversation was to apply them as a PLAYER. What good advice! This will make me a better player I believe. Mamet's idea of drama coming from the scene's main character's failure to achieve his goal is echoed a lot by the Story Games crowd. It makes for good gaming. Thanks for bringing it up.
Jason - congrats on breaking free. I listen to Canon Puncture. It is a good show on, as you mentioned, mostly indie/small press games. I don't play Vampire but appreciate you advocating for it.
Ruins - changing board is a neat idea.
Masters of Venice - I'm glad you covered it albeit extremely briefly. It is on the Hypermind Games Group 'need to play' list. So hopefully I'll get a play in soon. It's ability to handle 5 players is very good and I like that it is deep with many potential strategies.
Covert Action sounds like a fun variation on Werewolf that may go over with the group as well.
Come over to Yucata.de and challenge me to a game. I lose a lot if that helps.
Go Forth and Game,

Action Castle is a Parsley Game, not Parser.
